Busch competed in seven of the final eight races of the 2000 season and then in the 2001 season opener in which Earnhardt ultimately lost his life. Newman made his lone start with Earnhardt at Phoenix Raceway late in the 2000 season. They competed against Earnhardt in a combined nine races, with Newman doing so in one and Busch doing so in eight.

By the end of the racing season, he had become the first driver to win over $200,000 in his rookie year he was rewarded with NASCAR's prestigious Rookie of the Year honors.
